Most precision molds that arrive “damaged” were packed as cargo, not as a machine.

An LSR tool is a heated, vacuum-assisted, tightly spotted shutoff with cold-runner plumbing and thermocouples. A drop that would not bother a pallet of parts will brinell a land, crack a heater hole, or flood a channel with seawater. Overseas tooling makes this a process, not a handshake at the dock.

What actually fails in transit

Work top to bottom, like a receiving technician.

Rust on shutoffs and cavities. Condensation in a steel box, un-oiled lands, paper that holds moisture against a polish. LSR will print pits and haze forever. Aluminum oxidizes less dramatically and still scars.

Shock to the land and to slides. Insufficient blocking. A slide slams in its pocket. A leader pin bends. Vacuum seals slice.

Water. Container rain, a tarp that is a sail, a crate that sat in a yard. Water in heater wells and in cooling/heating channels is a later electrical and corrosion problem.

Loose inserts and spare cores rattling in a rag. The spare you paid for arrives as a witness of the ride.

Bent connectors, smashed thermocouples, cracked insulation between hot and cold halves. The tool looks fine until tryout.

Customs delay in a humid port with a crate that was only “oiled a bit.” Time is a corrosion agent.

Wrong HS code / incomplete packing list that holds the crate while paperwork iterates. Not physical damage. Calendar damage.

Pack it like a machine (sequence)

  1. Clean to a known state. No LSR residue, no water left in channels. Blow channels dry. A wet channel sealed in a crate is a rust factory.
  1. Protect faces. Light rust preventive on steel lands and cavities, compatible with later LSR (you will degrease before production). Do not lacquer a medical polish unless you have a removal plan. Wax or peel-coat on high polish if that is the shop standard; document it.
  1. Home and lock moving items. Slides, unscrewing cores, ejector plates. Shipping locks. Tape is not a lock.
  1. Bag. VCI paper or sealed barrier bag with desiccant sized for the steel mass and the weeks of calendar, not a hotel silica packet. Humidity indicator card where receiving can see it without unpacking the whole cavity.
  1. Block in the crate. Wood or foam that takes load on the *base*, not on the cavity face. The tool should not be able to walk. Center of gravity marked. Lifting points marked. If the cold-runner manifold is delicate, it is not a handle.
  1. Spares in their own nested box, labeled, not loose in the same void.
  1. Crate spec. Plywood, skids for a pallet jack, shock-watch or tilt indicators if the tool is high value. “Export crate” means ISPM-15 wood if applicable, not a romantic stencil.
  1. **Documents in a pouch *and* a scan:** packing list, tool list (inserts counted), SDS for rust preventive if asked, ownership statement, photos of the packed tool before the lid.
  1. Insurance against the replacement construction cost, not against the “used mold” line someone will invent. Photograph steel-complete before shipping; those photos are the claim.

Mode, without folklore

Air is shock and cost, less time in humidity. Sea is cheaper, longer, more condensation risk, more handling. A precision 103 LSR tool with a medical polish usually should not take the cheapest slow boat unless the crate and VCI plan are serious and the calendar is honest.

Do not ship a fully assembled hot/cold LSR stack if the shop can send halves blocked separately with a fit-up photo set. Some tools must travel assembled. Then the blocking has to assume that assembly.

Hand-carry of inserts happens on high-IP jobs. The base can go freight. That is a logistics choice and an IP choice.

Receiving protocol (do this before you argue)

  • Photograph the crate, indicators, humidity card, and seals before opening.
  • Open, count inserts against the packing list, photograph lands under raking light.
  • Check heater continuity and thermocouple continuity before you apply rust-remover stories.
  • Do not run the tool until channels are confirmed clear and dry.
  • Degrease with a method compatible with platinum LSR (no sulfur-laden leftovers).
  • A short dry-cycle (heat, no shot) to prove zones. Then first-off.

If the land is brinelled, stop. That is salvage-vs-replace, not “it will spot in.”

Customs and paperwork that protect the steel

  • Tool identified as buyer property / returnable tooling if that is the commercial truth.
  • Serial and tool number on crate and on invoice.
  • No-tooling-export clauses do not stop customs; they stop a shop from sending *your* crate to a cousin. Still write the destination factory address.
  • For dual-use or medical-device paperwork, ask your broker. Do not invent a code to look cheap.

Quotes that skip the crate

A quote that says “FOB, mold, wooden box” with no VCI, no insert count, no photos, no shock plan.

A shop that ships the spare cavity in the same unblocked void as the wrenches.

Freight savings that skip insurance on a Class 103 tool. You are self-insuring a recut.

Write on the PO: “Export crate, VCI/desiccant, humidity card, slides locked, load on base not cavity, insert count, pre-ship photo set, shock indicator, insurance at replacement construction. Receiving photos before first heat.”
