Why the First Sample Needs a Mold Change | RUUIPON
CAD lock freezes millimetres, not the first dump's luck. Budget a modification after witness: logo, vent, jacket, split. Sample is not MOQ 20.
CAD lock means you signed millimetres, Shore, split, and dump family. It does not mean the first witness dump will ship as production. Resin fills differently than the CAD preview. Chocolate contracts; pectin does not. A serif that looked correct on a screen starves or tears. A tray that sat flat in CAD sags about 0.5–1.5 mm loaded. We would rather you expect a modification after the first sample — logo, vent, jacket, parting — than treat T1-as-if-steel and argue that tooling charge bought a perfect first pour. The sample is paid. Production is MOQ 20 pieces per design after the *second* lock if millimetres moved.

Does not apply when you are recasting an unsanded master with no dump change (same lock, no modification), when the first sample failed because the cup was off-ratio (mix, not CAD), or when you want unlimited art direction inside the $50 line. Those jobs are remakes or new quotes.
What usually moves after dump one
Logo fill or tear. Stroke and depth were a conversation; the dump is the test. Confirm: empty well vs dump at QC distance. Fix: millimetres on the master, recast. Not Shore first.
Sag and outer-row grams. Jacket was skipped “to save rubber.” Confirm: straightedge on a loaded tray; weigh sheet center vs rim (outer rows on gummy sheets often run 3–6% heavy when sag is in play). Fix: jacket or drop cavity count. Modification of structure, not a complaint that CAD lied.
Vent / split after a rigid dump. The clay master peeled; the PU does not. Confirm: glossy well, dump locked on a hook. Fix: Structure Decision — two-part, plug, or core. This is the modification people skip in the first RFQ.
Shore felt wrong in the hand. Soft peeled and wrinkled; hard locked a hook. Confirm: you asked for a Shore before anyone dumped. Fix: recast in a named band. We would not guess 50A in chat.
Inhibition or a dead cup is not a modification. That is a remake from a quiet master or a weighed mix. Do not file it as an ECO.

The photo that would prove a needed modification: signed lock screenshot, first dump in the well, mark-up of the millimetre you want changed. A “looks off” email is not that pack.
Worked example (anonymized)
A 12-cavity PU mascot, locked as a one-piece 20A glove because the printed master peeled. First dump locked at the arms. That was not a failed mix; the well was glossy. We modified to a keyed two-part, same Shore, jacket. CAD scope applied — $50 because the split land had to be modeled. Second lock, pour in the 3–7 business day window. Witness released. MOQ 20 of the split design. The first glove was a paid sample, not production.
Steel T1 language does not map cleanly onto an RTV glove. A press part has plates, shrink in the 1.5–2.5% (HCR) or 2–3% (LSR) band, and a ballooned FAI. A platinum tray has a master, a 0.1–0.3% shrink band, and a dump that is not rubber. If you bring a T1 checklist, we will translate it: witness dump, cavity map, logo photo, jacket sag check. We will not sign a PPAP we do not run.
Write the modification budget on the first PO even if you hope not to use it. Buyers who skip that line treat every millimetre change as a fight. Buyers who include it ship faster. Charge paid is still not unrestricted title to a third geometry after you change the brand twice. Say archive rights on the PO.

One procurement mix-up
“Sample approved” on a PO while the dump still needs a vent is how you multiply a bad tool to MOQ 20. Approve the dump you will run, or approve “skin OK, CAD change follows.” Tooling charge on the first skin is not unrestricted ownership of every later split, and it is not a free second design.

FAQ
Why can't the first sample be the production tool? Sometimes it can, if the dump matches CAD. Often a logo, vent, or jacket still moves. Plan the loop so MOQ 20 is the lock you will run.
Is a modification the same as a remake for inhibition? No. Inhibition is chemistry; scrap the food skin. Modification is millimetres or structure you signed too early.
Do I pay $50 for every tweak? USD $50 when CAD scope applies. A recast of the same lock is not that fee. A new split land often is.
How long is the second pour? Same band: 3–7 business days after the *new* CAD lock, not after the first email.
Does the first sample count toward MOQ 20? Only if the PO says the sample skins are production-capable of the same lock. A modified design is a new lot at MOQ 20 per design.
