Plaster bandage (gypsum-impregnated gauze) is a laminated mother you wrap around a cured or clay-backed RTV glove. It is not a poured plaster jacket, and it is not the cavity you dump into. You wet the bandage, laminate overlapping strips, and let it set so a 10A–20A skin can take a wet plaster or concrete column without ballooning. Bandage wins on irregular statues in a shop that will not ship the fixture. It loses on freight, dishwashers, clamp bolts, and pressure pots. Food trays almost never want bandage; they want a board or a light carrier, a dry well, no grease, no tin.

Does not apply when you want a silicone mold *of* a plaster sculpture (master is plaster — seal it), when you already poured a gypsum mother in a box (that's the poured-jacket page), or when you plan to vac-cast PU in the glove. Bandage crushes under vacuum.

Bandage versus poured gypsum versus FRP

Bandage. Fast, follows a statue, no box. Weak in tension, hates water after set, chips in a carton. Keys are clumsy: you cast pockets before laminating or you strap the glove in by friction.

Poured plaster. Better keys, heavier, still thirsty, still poor freight. Needs a box or a clay wall.

FRP. Clamp, pot, ship. More labor. Food lines still rarely need it.

Printed shell. Bolts and keys in CAD. Best when the glove repeats.

Run Structure Decision: flat back → open-back, jacket optional. Else peel? If no → two-part. Large wet dump → mother required — then pick bandage vs FRP from *where the tool lives*, not from a craft-store aisle.

Release the glove before you laminate so the mother comes off for storage. If you bond bandage to platinum, you have glued the jacket on.

ISO 3302-1 M2 is a drawing class on the dump, not a gauze-count.

Shop sequence we actually laminate

Release the cured glove. Seat it on the master or a dummy so it holds shape. Laminate bandage in overlapping passes, working into undercuts of the *jacket* so you don't lock the shell onto a hook. If the jacket itself undercuts, split the bandage and key the shell. Dry. Demold the mother. Store the glove cavity-up, not crushed inside a damp shell.

Do not laminate over a food well that still has chocolate film. Cabinets split. A bandage mother that lived on a concrete glove does not visit a gummy tray.

Water, storage, and why bandage stays in the studio

Set gypsum keeps drinking. A damp shell stored around a platinum glove can stain, smell, and stick. Dry the mother, store it off the skin, keep the glove cavity-up in the library. Ozone and UV still apply to the rubber — bandage is not a UV shield. Don't leave a food-adjacent tray in the same tote as a concrete bandage shell.

If the dump is only moderately wet and the span is small, a light plastic carrier or a printed shell may beat bandage without the water drama. Bandage is for irregular, stay-put statues, not for every "jacket" checkbox.

A dummy dump inside the glove while you laminate keeps undercuts from collapsing. Pull the dummy before the dump campaign. Food gloves don't get resin dummies; use a food-cabinet dummy or skip bandage entirely.

Worked example (anonymized)

Architectural relief, 800 mm, platinum ~15A glove. Buyer asked for a poured plaster box mother; the relief would have wasted a crate of gypsum. We laminated bandage in the shop, split the shell on a designed land ($50 CAD for the land), witness wet-plaster dump, MOQ 20 skins on rotation. The bandage stays in their studio. Food was not on the PO.

Operators sometimes ask for a "thin bandage so the glove still flexes in the jacket." Flex is the skin's job; the mother should be boring and stiff enough that sag stays out of the 0.5–1.5 mm complaint band on a loaded dump. If you need flex, you don't need bandage — you need a different Structure Decision.

One procurement mix-up

Ordering "a plaster jacket" without saying bandage vs poured vs FRP. Freight quotes then lie. Tooling charge is not a shipping crate, and it is not unrestricted ownership of a wet gypsum shell we will not put on a plane.

FAQ

Is bandage "the same plaster" as a poured mother? Same family, different structure. Bandage is laminated gauze. Poured is a gypsum block. Keys, freight, and water resistance differ.

Can I wet-sand bandage and call it food-contact? We would not. Gypsum dust and food wells don't share a SOP. Food trays stay platinum, dry, no tin.

Will more bandage layers replace FRP for a pot cycle? No. Thickness is not tensile stiffness under psi.

Do I recast the glove when the bandage chips? Usually rebuild the mother. Recast the skin if it ballooned or tore.

Does CAD include bandage layout? CAD is cavity and, when needed, jacket split. Strip paths are process. $50 when geometry is still open.
