Pouring a fresh mix onto a tacky platinum face looks like a clever salvage. It is not. If the face is inhibited, the poison is still in the contact layer — new rubber on top skins or bonds poorly and you ship a two-layer food well with an unknown interface. If the face is merely oily from a dump, the new pour copies grease and you have spent A/B on a dirty wall. We recast from the master. We would not salvage a food-contact cavity this way, and we would not call a patch a production tool.

Does not apply when you are bonding a *new* platinum glove to a clean, fully cured jacket with a named primer as a designed two-shot skin (that is a structure choice, not salvage). It also does not apply to tin-on-tin craft repairs you already accepted as non-food. Don't mix families on a recast.

Why a second pour fails the job you think it saves

Inhibited face (strings; jacket firm). Cause: sulfur, latex, SLA oligomer, tin salts, amines — still present. Confirm: stick test on the old face. Fix: scrap the food skin. Seal or replace the master. New pour in a clean box. A “cap coat” on the tacky well will either stay wet at the interface or make a skin that peels on dump three.

Oily or etched used well, rubber otherwise cured. Cause: dump leftover or chemistry chew. Confirm: unused spare is dry; used well smears. Fix: recast, don't cap. Oil at the interface is a delamination starter.

Whole mass still soft, including the back. Cause: off-ratio or expired B, not a face problem. Confirm: leftover puck from the same cup is soft. Fix: throw the pour. Weigh 1:1 or 10:1. Do not pour good mix onto a dead mix and hope the catalyst migrates.

Buyer wants a harder cap on a soft glove. Cause: Shore shopping after the fact. Confirm: the request is “paint 40A in the well.” Fix: recast the skin in the Shore you actually wanted, with a jacket if sag is the issue. A hard cap on a 10A glove wrinkles and shears.

Platinum on tin leftover is a poison recast, not a salvage. Tin on a platinum food well is a path we would not spec.

Worked example (anonymized)

A DLP mascot, unsealed, platinum 20A gummy skin. Face wet at 24 h. Buyer brushed a second 1:1 mix into the wells overnight. Morning: cap skinned, interface still strings, logo smeared. We scrapped both layers for food. Sealed the print, witness slug, new skin. CAD locked; no $50. MOQ 20 after the clean witness. The cap coat was waste A/B.

One procurement mix-up

“Silicone sticks to silicone, so a second pour will weld and hide tack” mixes two facts. Clean, fully cured platinum can accept a designed new skin with prep. A poisoned or oily face will not. Write which you have. Tooling charge ≠ a right to patch instead of recast.

What actually happens at the interface

Platinum addition-cure needs an unpoisoned catalyst and a clean, fully networked wall if you want a second layer to mean anything. On a sticky face you have neither.

A cap coat that *skins in air* can look dry on the dump side while the contact side stays a gel. Operators then call the well “cured enough.” The next rigid dump shears that gel like paint. You also stack shrink: the first pour already took its 0.1–0.3% band; the cap takes its own. Logos go soft. Keys on a jacket no longer match the new inner skin.

If you already poured a cap, do not scrape it with a knife toward the serif. Cut a small witness from a hidden land if you must show us the layers; send that with the RFQ. We are looking for two Shore readings on one flake — cap versus original — not for a way to keep the flake in production.

Ownership stays on the original master. A patched tray is not an archive copy. If we remake, say who keeps the master and whether the failed skins are destroyed. Charge paid on the first pour is not unrestricted title to a salvage experiment.

  • Is this well food or craft? Food ends the salvage talk.
  • Face/jacket split or whole-mass soft?
  • Will the shop recast from the master instead of accepting a cap coat you already tried?
  • Who pays for A/B wasted on a patch we will not ship?
  • Archive: the failed skin is not the production tool.

FAQ

Can fresh platinum finish an inhibited face? No. The catalyst at the contact layer is already poisoned. Heat and a cap coat do not rebuild that network. Remake.

Is a designed two-layer mold the same thing? No. A clean cured jacket plus a new skin with prep is structure. Salvage on tack is a failure mode.

What about Sil-Poxy on a tacky well? A craft tear patch on *cured* rubber is a different article. Glue on an inhibited food face is still scrap.

Will you take a patched sample as the production master? We would not copy a two-layer salvage as the production face. We go back to the original master.

Does refusing salvage change MOQ? The failed sample is not production. After a clean recast witness, production is still MOQ 20 pieces per design. $50 CAD only if the master cannot be reused.
