If you're printing a temperature on a food-grade RTV mold carton, that's a use claim, not a separate law and not a 21 CFR 177.2600 extraction result. 177.2600 extracts the finished repeated-use rubber article in water and n-hexane at reflux. It doesn't, by itself, prove an oven number. LFGB/BfR XV time and temperature should represent the claim: oven, boiling, hot-fill, or freezer.

Platinum addition-cure networks handle heat well compared with many organics, which is why bakeware RTV exists. That isn't a license to print an invented peak, skip post-cure, or run a broiler-empty pan. Don't say FDA approved because the pan survived 180 °C in a kitchen anecdote.
Common mix-up: the reflux flask, or a compounder's gum curve, is the carton temperature
A lot of RFQs write nonsense like “177.2600 at 300 °C” or copy a competitor's 300 °C banner. In the shop that usually means BfR XV run at 40 °C, a pigmented 15 mm muffin wall that smells on first bake, and a frame or jacket that fails before the rubber does.
Write two lines on the drawing: food-contact methods (21 CFR 177.2600 food types; LFGB/BfR XV simulants) and service envelope (oven maximum claimed, freezer minimum claimed, dishwasher if claimed). Then make sure the German/EU lab uses times and temperatures that represent that envelope. Confirm current BfR XV. Dry-food GMP language in 177.2600 still isn't an oven rating.
What to ask when you're buying a temperature claim
- Maximum oven temperature you'll print, and is food always in the cavity (empty-pan peaks are a different, usually rejected, claim)?
- Compounder service range for *this pigmented* platinum RTV grade, not a generic curve
- Post-cure already scaled to max wall, so the customer's first bake isn't your volatiles oven
- LFGB/BfR XV conditions that represent oven vs chocolate-ambient vs freezer
- Jacket and any steel frame: who fails first, the rubber or the bond line?
- Dishwasher yes/no and drain geometry
Oven, freezer, dishwasher — three claims, three failure modes
Oven bakeware: batter plus heat. Failures are under-post-cured volatiles (smell in the kitchen), distortion of thin walls, and over-claiming a peak the pigment or jacket can't take. Empty pans on a top-element broiler are abuse. Freezer ice trays: low temperature, aqueous food, twist demold; cold doesn't waive 177.2600. Dishwasher: hot water, detergent, mechanical; trapped dirty water and detergent taste fail sensory. Microwave only if the article has no unevaluated metal. A mat, a muffin block, and an ice tray shouldn't share a single copied temperature banner.
Platinum RTV, properly post-cured, stays elastic across the range bakeries actually use when claims are conservative. Overheating can accelerate remaining volatiles, age pigments, distort thin webs, cook leftover oils into varnish, and unbond jackets. Post-cure itself is a high-heat step in a ventilated oven, scaled to thickness — process, not a consumer instruction to torch the pan. Tin-cure RTV and industrial gums may look like bakeware and then smell or extract when heated.
Three numbers get collapsed into one banner: the compounder's service range, marketing's round carton number, and the lab's BfR XV table. If those three disagree, lower the carton. Don't stretch the lab or ignore the compounder.
Worked example: 6-cavity brownie, carton vs shop oven
A bakery wants a 6-cavity brownie mold, cavities about 80 × 50 mm, platinum RTV with a rigid jacket, 150–400 oven cycles a month, carton aiming at 220 °C.
Shop qualification uses the production article, production color, and a load that resembles batter — not a leftover industrial slab. A slab proves the gum can take heat. The pan has ribs, a jacket, and pigment. Record distortion and smell. Then keep the carton inside what you saw and what BfR XV represented. US 177.2600 still sits beside this, unmoved: reflux extraction for named food types. Don't relabel that reflux as oven proof.
When a temperature lecture is the wrong page
If the mold is chocolate-only and you never print oven, don't buy an oven kitchenware LFGB package. If you need 50,000 LSR *pans* with heater bands in the tool, that's a parts OEM envelope, not this RTV jacket. If the listing is tin-cure resin, heat-resistance marketing is a hazard. A 2 mm ice sheet and a 15 mm muffin rim don't share a peak. Geometry can override the compounder curve.

FAQ
Does 21 CFR 177.2600 certify my 220 °C carton claim? The section extracts the finished article in water and n-hexane at reflux for repeated-use rubber. Oven claims need an honest service envelope and, for LFGB/BfR XV, conditions that represent oven use.
Why do some molds smell only on first bake? Often leftover cyclics from short post-cure, driven off by the customer's oven instead of the factory's. That first bake is food-contact. Fix post-cure. Don't treat smell as a necessary seasoning.
Can I put a silicone muffin tray under a broiler? Only if that abuse is inside the maker's claim. Direct top-element heat on an empty pan is a common way to exceed the envelope. Food-safe isn't flame-safe.
Does freezer use require a different compound than oven use? Sometimes a different Shore and geometry; not a different law. Aqueous 177.2600 still applies. A dual oven-and-freezer SKU must be designed and claimed for both.
Will a higher post-cure raise service temperature forever? Post-cure clears volatiles and finishes the network. It isn't a way to turn a non-food gum into oven ware or to justify an invented peak. Thickness-scale the bake, then stay inside the compound's real envelope.
