Text and Lettering Design for Silicone Molds
Design readable molded text by reviewing stroke width, depth, spacing, draft, corner radius, emboss/deboss direction, master quality and the final casting material.
Small text can look clear in artwork and still become unreadable after it is converted into a 3D master, molded in silicone and reproduced in the final casting.
Legibility depends on more than font size.
Review the smallest stroke, depth, spacing, corner shape, draft, casting material, surface finish and release direction.
A large font can still contain very thin strokes.
Measure:
- narrowest stroke
- smallest gap
- isolated islands
- serif tips
- internal counters
Define whether the finished product should have:
- raised text
- recessed text
This reverses the feature direction inside the mold.
More depth does not always mean clearer text.
Excess depth can create:
- trapped fill
- fragile mold features
- difficult cleaning
- demolding stress
Where visual design allows:
- soften sharp roots
- avoid extreme vertical walls
- give narrow islands support
Select draft for the geometry, material and expected demolding load, then verify release with the prototype.
Chocolate, gummy, resin, soap, plaster, wax and ice reproduce details differently.
The same text geometry may not work identically across applications.
Side-wall text can be harder to fill and release than text on an open horizontal face.
Review release direction carefully.
The master must reproduce the text first.
Check:
- vector artwork
- CAD resolution
- master-production method
- print/machining artifacts
- finish
For critical text:
- use final artwork
- produce real-scale geometry
- mold prototype
- cast actual material
- inspect readability and release
Can you reproduce tiny text exactly from a logo image?
Not always. Artwork may need vectorization and simplification.
Can we make the letters deeper?
Sometimes, but depth must still work with stroke width and release.
Can I approve the logo/text before the entire production order?
Yes. Prototype-first is the recommended route.
Is there one minimum font size?
No.
Is vector artwork better?
Yes, for controlled geometry.
