Why RTV Molds Tear After Many Cast Cycles | RUUIPON
Tears after dozens of dumps are nicks, inversion fatigue, or dump chemistry — not a first-use logo hook. Map cycle count, then recast or rotate spares.
A flap that appears on dump 60 at a hinge or a web is not the same failure as a serif that ripped on invert one. First-use tears are geometry: a hook, a knife-edge counter, a 1 mm web asked to be a beam. Late tears are fatigue, a nick that grew, cold invert of a stiff tray, or a dump that etched the lip until it split. Raising Shore A on the next PO without a cycle map usually moves the tear. Recast from the locked master, or rotate spares, after you know which pattern you have.

Does not apply when the rubber tore on the first invert at the same letter on every cavity (geometry — fillet, shallower mark, split), when a knife started the nick during flash trim, or when the *dump* tore and the well is intact. ISO 3302-1 M2 on a drawing is not a cycle-life spec.
Late-tear patterns
Same hinge or invert crease, after many dumps, first weeks were clean. Cause: the skin is the hinge. Fatigue at a fold you never designed. Confirm: first-week photo vs now; origin is a crease, not a serif root. Jacket still whole. Fix: thicker skin, a real hinge, or a jacket so the well is not the beam. We would not jump to 50A and keep folding a 1 mm wall.
Tear from a nick that was not there at dump 10. Cause: spatula, flash trim toward the logo, grit in a resin dump, or a dishwasher rack. Confirm: early photo; nick location matches a tool path, not a letter tail. Fix: recast; change handling. A nick is a tear starter in 10A–20A. Do not “glue production food wells.”
Tear only on cold trays, after the shop moved dumps into a fridge routine. Cause: cold rubber plus a thin web you got away with at room temp for fifty cycles. Confirm: same tray at room temp peels; fridge-stiff tray splits. Fix: demold warmer, or jacket. Don't store nested in a freezer.
Lip around a well etches then splits after a named aggressive dump (amine epoxy, abrasive plaster, alkaline soap). Cause: chemistry plus flex, not a surprise serif. Confirm: unused spare from the same pour still has a sharp lip; used wells are dull then torn. Fix: recast; barrier or a different dump family; retire food if the well ever was food. Cycle count on the RFQ.
All cavities tear at the original aggressive serif, just later than you hoped. Cause: the letter was always a hook; early dumps were lucky. This is still geometry, discovered late. Confirm: flap origin is the serif root on every well, even the least-used. Fix: CAD change — fillet, depth, split — then recast. Shore was never the first lever.

Worked example (anonymized)
A 24-cavity resin tray, platinum ~25A, no jacket. Fine through dump ~40. At dump ~70 a border crease split on invert. Buyer asked for 40A and a first-use serif lecture. Early photos showed intact serifs and a sharp fold line. We recast with a jacket, same Shore, same logo. CAD lock held; no $50. MOQ 20 plus a spare skin for rotation. The serif was not the origin.
Cycle count on an RTV tray is a shop log, not a warranty. We will not invent a “dumps until tear” number for your resin. What we will do is recast from an unsanded master while that master still exists, and we will quote a rotation qty so one nick does not stop a run. If the master was sanded “to clean it” after dump 40, the recast will copy the sanding. Say that on the RFQ.

One procurement mix-up
“Cycle life” on a marketplace listing is not a PO line. RTV is a recast tool. Write dump chemistry, invert method, and whether you will buy spares. Tooling charge ≠ a steel-like life, and it is not unrestricted redesign when the crease was never on the 2D.

FAQ
Is a tear at dump 80 the same as a tear at dump 1? Usually not. Dump 1 at a serif is a hook. Dump 80 at a crease is fatigue or a nick. Send both photos.
Will a harder Shore stop late tearing? It can delay a hinge and lock the dump. Jacket and handling first. Shore is a recast decision after the origin is known.
Can I Sil-Poxy a production food tray? We would not keep that well on a food path. Craft maybe; say so. Recast is the production answer.
Do spares change MOQ? Spares are extra pieces of the same design. Production lots are still MOQ 20 pieces per design unless the PO is a paid sample.
If CAD must add a hinge, is that $50? USD $50 when that CAD scope applies — a real hinge or web change is often that scope. A recast of the same lock is not a remodel.
