How Many Casts Can You Get From an RTV Mold | RUUIPON

Cast count is not dump count. Count shippable pieces per cavity, not tray flexes. Typical shop planning bands, not a warranty, plus what to log before

How Many Casts Can You Get From an RTV Mold | RUUIPON

"How many times can you use a silicone mold" is two different counters. Dump count is how many times you filled the tray. Cast count is how many *shippable pieces* left the cavities. A 12-up that you flexed once made twelve casts or zero, depending on flash, tears, and underfill. We plan recast from those logs, not from a consumer "hundreds of uses" bullet. RUUIPON does not sell a cycle warranty on custom RTV. We sell a tool you can recast from a living master. Bao'an since 2018. MOQ 20 pieces per design. USD $50 when CAD applies. Prototype 3–7 business days after CAD lock.

A press-cycle count on steel/LSR *parts* is a different meter — wydsilicone.com. Don't paste that number onto a 20A gummy sheet.

Does not apply when you never logged a T1, when the first flex already tore a serif (geometry, not count), or when you want a number for a retail box. This page is how a shop should count so the next PO is a recast, not an argument.

Count cavities, not tray flexes

A buyer says "we used it 40 times." That might be 40 dumps × 8 cavities = 320 casts, or 40 dumps with three cavities taped off after week two. The taped wells are already at end of life; the live wells are not.

Log, even crudely:

  1. Date / dump ID
  2. Cavities actually filled
  3. Pieces shipped vs scrap (tear, bubble, underfill)
  4. Wash method that day
  5. Any solvent, oil, or dishwasher

When shipped pieces per cavity drop, or scrap clusters on the same well, that well is done. Replacing the whole 8-up because one logo land died may still be correct (food hygiene, nest balance) — call it that, don't call it "the mold only lasted 40 uses."

Symptom: "suddenly" flash all around after a round number of dumps. Cause: shut stretched, jacket walked, or you started noticing. Confirm: piece-weight and flash photos vs T1, per cavity if you can. Fix: recast; don't keep counting flexes on a stretched shut.

Typical shop values (planning counts, not a promise)

Caption: Typical shop values. Planning bands for rotation, not a named-PO measurement and not a warranty.

SetupWhat to countWhy flex count lies
Open-back chocolate 12-upPieces shipped / cavityOne flex ≠ twelve good bars if temper failed
Gummy depositor trayGood dumps that met gram bandOuter-row heavy (often 3–6%) is a nest issue, not "uses left"
Two-part resin figurineGood pulls before key bruiseOpen/close cycles chew keys even with no pour
Plaster with jacketGood pieces before face abradesJacket cycles ≠ rubber abrasion
Food tray after one resin testStop count; retireCabinet ended the food life at one dump

Cavity Shore often 10A–20A gloves, 20A–40A trays. Platinum shrink about 0.1–0.3%. Mix 1:1 or 10:1 by weight. Loaded sag without jacket about 0.5–1.5 mm — that can end "uses" on dump one. Prototype: 3–7 business days after CAD lock. Production: MOQ 20 per design. Simple 3D: USD $50 when that CAD scope applies.

The photo that would prove a count argument: traveler sheet with dump ID and a cavity map of scrap. A sticky note that says "40x" is not that photo.

When the count should not decide

RUUIPON Mold Structure Decision can zero the remaining count: a one-piece glove that should have been a split will tear at an undercut on dump five or dump fifty — the structure was wrong, the counter is a distraction. Flat back → open-back. Peelable undercuts → glove. If they will not peel → two-part / plug / core. Large wet casting → mother mold.

Food-contact skins: one soap or resin dump ends the food count at that moment. Keep counting on a craft traveler if you keep the skin.

ISO 3302-1 class on the drawing does not convert into a use number.

Worked example (anonymized)

A 16-up pectin tray, platinum ~20A. Buyer: "we got 80 uses, is that bad?" Log showed 80 dumps, but cavities 13–16 were taped after dump 12 because of a torn serif. Real count on the live 12 was 80 dumps; the dead four had 12. Recast of the same CAD would reprint the thin serif. $50 CAD to thicken that land, lock, 3–7 business days, witness, MOQ 20. We asked them to log per-cavity scrap on the next lot. First tooling charge did not include a free revision.

Reading a traveler without inventing a warranty

Ask the floor to mark a cavity map (1–N) on the jacket, not on the food face. After each dump, hash scrap onto that map. When one well hashes three times for the same tear, stop counting "the tray" as one organism. Recast or tape (craft only). If every well hashes for underfill, you are counting a depositor or pour-head problem as mold death — send the nest drawing, not a complaint that "uses were low." Paying tooling does not buy a guaranteed hash-free month; it buys a master you can recast from if archive was written.

One procurement mix-up

Treating YouTube "I used this mold 200 times" as a spec. Unknown rubber, unknown dump, no jacket, no food docs. Your RFQ needs dump chemistry, structure, and a recast plan. Ownership of tooling is not a coupon for 200 guaranteed dumps.

We would not recommend

We would not recommend a purchase order that only says "must last 500 uses" with no dump named.

We would not recommend counting tray flexes on a multi-cavity food sheet.

We would not recommend oiling to squeeze extra dumps out of a dying food face.

We would not recommend mixing chocolate dump counts and concrete dump counts in one KPI.

What to ask when you're buying

  • Will we log per-cavity scrap, or only tray flexes?
  • What dump and wash sit behind the "times" number on the RFQ?
  • Multi-cavity: is a single torn well a full-tray recast for food?
  • Rotation so counts don't run to zero while a recast ships?
  • Master archive so "times" can restart on a new skin?

FAQ

Does one dump of an 8-up count as one use or eight? Eight casts if eight pieces shipped. One dump if you are logging tray flexes — say which language you mean on the RFQ.

If I only pour weekends, do I get more uses? Calendar storage can still yellow, shrink tin, or print keys. Low dump count is not a full library pass.

Can you serialize cavities so I can count them? We can mark jacket IDs and cavity maps on the traveler. Ask at CAD lock. Don't scratch serials into a food well with a knife.

Is 20 pieces MOQ the same as 20 uses? No. MOQ 20 is how many *tools* we pour per design. Uses are what you do after they arrive.

Will a pressure pot increase cast count? A pot can reduce bubbles in a *resin* dump. It does not add rubber life. Don't pressure-cook a food tray as a life hack.
