If You Pay a Silicone Mold Development Fee, What Should You Own?

P88 should add a narrower "development fee" procurement section to that page.

Module A: a development fee can cover multiple assets

Ask the quotation to separate:

• CAD/3D modeling;
• master;
• prototype mold;
• production mold;
• FRP mother mold;
• special fixture;
• test casting;
• file release.

Paying one lump-sum "tooling fee" does not explain which assets transfer to the buyer.

Module B: ownership and possession are different

A master can be customer-owned but stored at the supplier.

A production mold can be supplier-stored but dedicated to one customer.

A CAD file can be customer-owned but not yet delivered.

Define:

• contractual ownership;
• physical storage;
• right to request return;
• right to reproduce;
• right to transfer to another factory.

Module C: standard shop fixtures are not automatically customer tooling

Generic items such as reusable mold boxes, clamps, vacuum equipment and standard frames are normally shop assets.

Custom items such as a customer-specific master, FRP jacket, custom core or dedicated locator should be identified clearly.

Module D: damage/loss responsibility should be written down

If the supplier stores a customer-owned master, define:

• storage responsibility;
• what happens if it is damaged;
• whether replacement is charged;
• whether the buyer can request shipment.

Do not wait for a lost master to discover the answer.

Module E: transferability matters

If the buyer wants to move production later, specify:

• STEP/STL/native-file release;
• master shipment;
• mother-mold shipment;
• production-mold shipment;
• documentation package.

Transfer rights should be agreed before development begins.

Module F: PO/tooling agreement fields

Add:

• customer design/IP owner;
• CAD deliverable;
• native/export format;
• physical master owner;
• master storage location;
• production mold owner;
• FRP mother mold owner;
• standard shop fixtures excluded;
• supplier reuse prohibited?;
• reorder rights;
• file/tool transfer rights;
• end-of-project handover.

Module G: end-of-project handover

At project close, confirm:

• final approved CAD revision;
• master status;
• molds shipped/stored;
• support shell quantity;
• golden sample;
• QC record;
• future reorder reference.

This avoids confusion years later.
